Student Absences
1. When a family calls/emails to report a student absent due to illness, it is expected that the nurses follow up to get more information as needed to determine if any COVID procedures need to be put in place. This information needs to be shared with principals and me ASAP so we can then make plans and inform all applicable staff.
2. If a student is sick but NOT due to COVID or a potential COVID symptom, they are recorded as absent. Students in this situation do NOT get to access remote. Rather, they are sick and--just like in "normal" times--need to stay home to get well so they can return to school.
3. If a student is staying home by our decision due to COVID procedures, we let them know that students should join remote learning ASAP. However, this may take up to 24 hours for teachers/rosters to be adjusted. It is far more difficult to change from in person to remote in grades K-3 than 4-8, and teachers need more time to adjust for the shift.
4. Students may NOT "flex" to remote. In person students are expected to report in person to be counted in a day's attendance UNLESS we clear them to work remotely due to COVID procedures. If a student is absent from in person without an approved reason, they should be marked UNEXCUSED.
5. If a student we expect to be in person tries to join a class remotely, we will do our best to accommodate them, but staff has been directed to let the office know of the student joining. We will follow up since the student is expected to be at school if healthy or home recovering if ill.
Enchanted Backpack at Stanton!
Stanton School is preparing for a very special delivery on April 20 from the Enchanted Backpack Mobile Van Program. The non-profit organization was founded in 2017 to help fuel the minds and creativity of students and bring important resources to schools in a fun, magical way. With the help of Mr. Sefcik and 6th-grade teacher, Miss Serini, Stanton was selected to receive a delivery that includes a robust list of school supplies. Even more importantly, the delivery includes 1,500 quality books, recess equipment, art supplies, winter clothing, shoes, personal care items, games, incentive items, and more. All brand new! Enchanted Backpack believes that teachers have the power to positively impact the lives of their students and their families. They take pride in providing teachers with the resources they need to do what they do best--educate, engage, support, and inspire students. Stanton is very thankful for this wonderful opportunity. D114 believes that well-equipped students can learn better, help make our schools better, and build better futures for themselves.
Stanton Updates for Wednesdays
This year, the Wednesday schedule was designed to meet the needs of special populations, provide 1:1 and small group support for struggling students or those ready to do more, time for students to complete work or seek assistance from their teachers, time for iReady math minutes, collaborative team time, and necessary deep cleaning. Although we’ve faced challenges and uncertainties, our focus has and will always be to ensure that our students have the fundamental tools they need to think critically and meet the rigorous academic standards whether in school or in a fully remote setting.
Keeping that in mind, beginning Wednesday, April 21 we will add another layer of learning to our Wednesday schedule. Whether your child comes in-person or is remote, the school day will remain 8:30-1:30, but from 10:00-10:45 students will focus on one content area each week and from 12:15-1:00, students will meet again to discuss, receive feedback, and wrap up the content area lesson.
As parents/guardians, there is nothing you need to do except remind your child they are expected to be logged in and engaged in learning every Wednesday. Students will receive all the information and the Google classroom link for the content area lesson from their teacher.
While we continually work to provide new learning opportunities and adapt our best practices to these challenging times, our teachers are eager to begin these new lessons and look forward to a new level of learning for our students.
Thank you for your continued support as we execute District 114’s mission statement--to maximize and foster learning and growth for all through continuous improvement.
